Blast from the Very Far Past

Farthest-GRB-090423_380Maybe you saw it in today's news: astronomers have broken the record for the farthest thing ever seen. It's the gamma-ray burst GRB 090423, seen to happen last April 23rd in Leo, with a redshift of about 8.1. That means its light has been travelling through expanding space for 13.1 billion years, and that the burst took place 630 million years after the Big Bang.
The fading infrared afterglow of GRB 090423 is circled in this infrared image taken with the Gemini North Telescope in Hawaii last April. The burst was the farthest, earliest cosmic explosion yet seen.

Is Fermi Seeing Dark Matter?

Fermiall-skymaps341A team of Harvard researchers has upped the ante in the race to discover the true nature of dark matter.
Fermi: A sneak peek at the dark side.
NASA / GSFCIn a new paper posted online this week, the team says NASA’s Fermi satellite has confirmed the existence of a vast cloud of energetic electrons surrounding the center of our galaxy — electrons, they suggest, which could be subatomic shrapnel from dark matter particles colliding with one another.

If correct, their interpretation of the Fermi data would tie together a number of hints and puzzling observations that suggest dark matter is making itself visible through a process of annihilation. It also implies the existence of a new force to which only dark matter particles are attuned.
